After a tough two weeks with some hard fought games Alan Kelly and Gretchen Ahern emerged as winners of the 2019 Lakewood Handi-cap Matchplay. They pipped Billy Fitton and Rick O’Mahony Dorme two when Billy missed an opportunity to pull it back to 1 on the 34th hole. The difference between the pairings was the one shot conceded on each round which Alan and Gretchen made full use of. Billy and Rick has some fine games along the way, taking Eileen Murphy and Dan Shine to tie holes with his magnificent putt on the 36th to make it all square. Eileen and Dan got the better of Pat Conway and JP Murphy after winning their initial bout over Gentleman John and Margaret Bowen, Rick and Billy had a tough match against Pat O’Keefe and Sheila O’Leary. In the other section Gretchen and Alan defeated Frank Riordan and Paddy Dennehy in the quarter final while Betty White and Catherine O’Keeffe lost out along with Tim Linehan and Val O’Leary. JP moved into management and provided tactical coaching to son in law Alan after his early exit. This type of competition is good for improving the gane as it requires nerve wracking concentration. Well done to all who participated and especially to the winners who rose to the occasion it mattered.
The Club Open is commencing in two weeks time and there are a number of excellent prizes on offer in the over 55’s, Singles, Fourballs and the Scratch Cup.
