Lakewood Open 2017 Full Report & Winners

Well done to Barry Kavanagh from the Ranges the winner of the 2017 Lakewood
Opem with a fabulous 82 Nett and to John O’Sullivan whose 19 under took the
Overall Gross and which came very very close to Barry’s score as did our
own John Curtin who had one marvellous card with a 39 Nett but
Unfortunately nothing with it. As john said on Sunday its like being the
second man on the Moon and who remembers him. It was nice to see John
O’Sullivan taking the Dan Conway Memorial Prize as John would have spent
many a day in Dan’s Home when he was a young lad.
Bart Millard took the Senior Nett while the Lakewood Ladies Pat Conway
Gretchen Ahern, Mary O’Donovan and Eileen Murphy all featured in the
prizewinners
Rick O’Mahony was pipped for the Senior Gross by Tadgh Murphy from
St Anne’s while Darren O’Leary was the Nett Winner in the Intermediate with
his Mother, Val O’Leary, won the overall Nett in the Ladies so a great
result for the host club.

Conor O’Mahony from the Ranges took the Intermediate Gross and Shane
Kelleher from Crosshaven won the Junior Gross.

Having spent half the night on Friday and most of Saturday and part of
Sunday loading the score onto the new system with Gretchen and it’s a pain
on the proverbial but the system is a lot fairer than the old SRS system so
it’s not all bad.

The Scratch Cup was played Saturday in near perfect conditions, the course
was challenging, the weather was excellent with blue skies and a smiling
sun. The greens were very receptive but the going was very tough for the
vast majority of us. However for the big guns it was business as usual with
John Cahill Fermoy leading and the overall winner with 15 under. Chris
Scannell from Collins was pipped for the runner up position by Damien
Fleming, Deerpark and also for the Senior Gross by Darren Collins, St
Anne’s with Lakewood’s John O’Sullivan putting in a mighty effort for the
Host Club. Val O’Leary was very disappointed in her results unaware that
she was leading from the start and held pole position all day taking the
Ladies Gross while Club Secretary Gretchen Ahern was the Ladies Runner Up
on the back nine from Mary Murray, Rocklodge. Fermoy were also in the
Winners with Darren Duffy taking the Intermediate and Shane Kelleher from
Crosshaven on a roll taking the Junior Gross.
The 4 ball on Sunday were well supported with a large contingent from
Inniscarra descending on John Curtin first thing in the Morning. The
Overall Nett was won by Billy Fitton and John Curtin while the Gross
went to Bart Millard and Pat Moore. The Ladies Nett went to Pat Conway
and Catherine O’Keeffe while the Gents went to Paul O’Sullivan and
Gerard Flynn from the Majestic. Darren O’Leary and Valerie took the
Mixed Nett while Rick O’Mahony and Eddie Hanna from the Majestic won
second Gross. Eddie Hanna is looking at investing in part of the
course having surveyed it in depth all week. As he was present in the
club house for the presentations the Chairman Frank Riordan asked him
to look deep into his eyes and pull out the ticket for the raffle.
Eddie duly obliged and pulled out his own ticket from the hundreds of
tickets in the box to the delight of all present.

Thanks to all of the Pitch and Putt players that supported the open and
Scratch Cup and especially to the main sponsor Hammond Lane who sponsored
the overall winner and runner-up prizes. It was great to see the large
attendance and to see the course so well utilized and some super playing
from the players.

in St Mary and John’s Church Ballincollig at 6 pm.
Captains Prize starting Thursday with the Captains Night in the
