Val O’Leary and Pat Conway were in superb form in their match against Pat O’Keeffe and John Curtin wiping out Johns shots and running out worthy winners to earn a place in the final. Billy Fitton and PJ Curtin had their hands full with Darren O’Leary and Catherine O’Keeffe turning the corners all square but the lads upped their game and made it through to meet with the Girls on the Wednesday. Pj and Billy got a great start on the Wednesday night going four up after nine but the girls dug in and it was all square turning the corner. The lads diked the first for the second time and went one up which was the difference in the round with some superb performances from all four. Pat Conway chipped in on the 36th which took the games to tie holes. The Girls were unlucky not to capitalise on the first as the lads made a learodi of it but Val’s putt failed to fall. Billy Fitton failed to hold the 2nd green but his excellent chip went straight into the hole and the girls both missed their putt with Pat Conway’s ball staying on the hole and refusing to take the plunge. The Lads were very relieved to see the end of the match and the colour was seen coming back to PJ. For those that came and watch and supported the teams it was great entertainment and by my reckoning the Lads were in and around 20 under with the Girls not far behind.
Saturday saw the return to normal fourballs with the Curtin Boys back in the winner’s enclosure seeing John escorting Eileen Murphy to the podium for the Nett while brother PJ went home with the Gross with John Dineen and also put a smile on Josie Twomey’s face by claiming second Nett.
Sunday Morning saw the Senior Partnering of Dan Shine, Mary O’Donovan and Margaret Bowen finishing with 8 under and 13 coming off to take the Nett in a 3 ball scramble while Noel McCarthy, Mick Lehane and Mary Murphy (just back from the Canaries) settled for the Gross with 9 under. The Course as usual is in first class condition and the showers very kindly kept to the quarry while the games were played.
Congrats to Billy Webster who notched up another decade and celebrated in style in the newly refurbished Lakewood Bar over the weekend with Family and Friends.
Sunday night a few bravehearts ventured out in the rain and Paddy Dennehy ran away with the Nett partnered by Catherine O’Keeffe while John O’Sullivan anchoring Eileen & Dermot Murphy won Gross with Eileen.
