Saturday saw the start of the Christmas Competitions and the Members were very lucky that the heavy rain of last week went on holiday for the long weekend.. A fair sized crowd ventured out over the 3 days which saw a number of different combinations returning very good scores with a number of 8 and 9 under but Micky Ryan and Josie Twomey with 7 under and Josie’s handicap coming into play saw them take the nett with a magnificent score of 35 and a half. Micky definitely had a great weekend as he was back on the Monday and this time he partnered Valerie O’Leary and took the gross with 10 under beating his buddy Alan Kenneally and Rick O’Mahony on the back nine with 5 birdies to 4. Mark Spillane was there for 2nd nett with both John Dineen and Geraldine Spillane however his score on the Saturday with 6 birdies on the back nine with John pushed them into the winners enclosure to take 2nd nett. Next weekend sees the start of the Turkey Vouchers with Strokeplay.
Lakewood said goodbye over the weekend to one of our former Members, Mary Enright. who passed on after a long illness which she battled bravely. Mary was one of the Golden Girls that joined the Club when the late Jim O’Shea was the Club Coach and was part of the newcomers that filled the ranks to become one of the regular fourball players. That group formed a bond and a friendship that still exists. Mary was a lovely lady who would light up the room with her presence as she always had a smile and a kind word, it was a pleasure to play with her, for no matter how bad you played she never passed a comment or gave out. Our Deepest Sympathies to her husband Jerry, a former Club Captain and to her immediate and extended family, may her gentle soul rest in peace.
