Saturday newcomer Micky Ryan had a marvellous round on his debut outing and with a little help from Pat Moore took home second nett with an excellent score of 49 points while Valerie and Darren O’Leary were gross winners with 5 under and 41 points. However the overall nett went to Betty White and Catherine O’Keeffe with par and 51 points. Sunday morning one could be forgiven for thinking that Lakewood had moved to Spain such was the beautiful weather with the sun shining out of the lovely blue skies and a mild Mediterranean breeze with a large crowd in attendance and some of them enjoying themselves in the sand. With the large turnout there were more prizes on offer but it was the combination of Paddy Dennehy and Mary O’Donovan who took home the overall nett. Bart Millard was in superb form on a tough course took the gross with John Ahern whose birdie on the 11th made the difference. Tim Murphy and John Dineen dovetailed well to take second gross beating Valerie O’Leary this time partnered by hubby Mick partnered together for the first time in years and on the eve of their 30th Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations and well done to both and wishing them many more years of happiness together. Club President Gentleman John was also celebrating his 83 rd Birthday and while the Lakewood Choir sang Happy Birthday Valerie gave him a lovely cream cake for his cuppa. Paddy Dennehy was also in the winners for 2nd nett with Catherine O’Keeffe while Betty White took 3rd nett with Pat O’Keeffe who had a better back nine than P J Curtin. There was a huge turnout on Monday for the over 55’s and well done to all the winners, organisers and competitors. The course as usual was in magnificent condition, greens nice and fast, fairways lined and first cut neatly trimmed and overall a credit to the grounds crew, Mick, Pat and John and all those that help out when called upon. Course open to green fees, new members welcome, normal fourballs next week.
