It’s true what they say, the fine weather brings out the extra players and this was the case in Lakewood this week with the sun shining and the course in magnificent condition, the Members came out to play. The O’Keeffes had excellent draws on Wednesday with Pat drawing Rick O’Mahony and taking home the gross with a very respectable 8 under while Catherine was singing Paddy Dennehy’s praises coming in with a 38 nett to win the overall nett. Saturday to make it more interesting two scores were needed on hole number 4 which saw a large number of 7’s returned, it’s amazing what a little pressure can cause. However Mary O’Donovan and JP Murphy gelled well to take the second nett with 44 while the senior ladies Eileen Murphy and her good friend Sheila O’Leary put the boys to shame taking the gross with par. However Paddy Dennehy was back in the Winners enclosure with Ann O’Herlihy taking the overall nett with 41.5. Catherine O’Keeffe asked me not to mention her in the weekend notes. Alison Harvey back after a long sabbatical was pitching very well, nearly back to her former best but as she said herself a little bit of work is needed on the chipping. Eileen Murphy was back in form on Sunday morning taking the nett with Gentleman John Curtin returning 53 points. Serious consideration is being given to changing John’s name from Gentleman John to Machine Gun Curtin due to the number of shots in the handicap. JP Murphy is now considered the course expert as he has an in depth knowledge of every blade of grass and he was again in the Winners with John Ahern taking the gross with 5 under.
Sunday evening Gentleman John was back in the winners enclosure with DFermot Murphy with a score of 38.5 to take the nett while John Ahern and Pat Conway took the gross with 5 under leaving second nett for Eileen Murphy and Paddy dennehy.Normal Fourballs over the long weekend, course open to green fees and new members are always welcome.
