Saturday saw Mick O’Leary and Mark Spillane take the title for the 4 Ball Matchplay 2023 with a win over Frank Riordan and Tim Linehan on the 31st hole with 6 up and five holes left. Tim and Frank started well taking an early lead but with Mick O’Leary chipping Mark’s ball into the hole on the third it was all square. Frank and Tim forgot the ir shot on the 5th one of 3 per round and conceded the hole in error. By the 10th Mick and Mark were one up but with Mick getting a hole in one on the 11th and cancelling out another of the lads shots went 2 up, By the turn after the first round they kept the lead and Mick again holed on the 19th to go 3 up. It was tit for tat until the 10th when Mark sank Micks tee shot to go 5 up. Tim had a great tee shot on the11th and they won one back using their last shot. It was short lived as Mark sank Mick’s tee shot on the 12th to go 5 up and again they won the 13th to win with 6 up and 5 holes remaining. It was a great match and for the large turnout it was most enjoyable. Well done to the finalists, congratulations to Mick and Mark and Commiserations to Frank and Tim. We’ll done to all who played . Some great matches that could have went either way. The course was in superb condition and well done to Pat, John and JP. JP was in charge of the first aid cart but was so overcome with the atmosphere that he was seen nodding off on the 15th.
