The St Mary’s Competition was very well supported and as in previous years saw a substantial amount raised for this long standing competition. In existence with over 40 years and initially founded and organised by Rene O’Shea and the late Jim O’Shea this competition traditionally marks the end of the singles competitions and officially the end of summer. However judging by the numbers on the course over the past few days one could be forgiven to think we were in September and in Ireland as the sun was shining, the fairways were lush green and the greens were in magnificent fast condition thanks to the efforts of the ground crew who work tirelessly to keep the course in the high standard that it is in. John Ahern led the charge for the overall nett with a magnificent 88 while Kevin Crowley took the second nett with 91 nett. However Mick O’Leary back in form took the gross with a superb 8 under. For the Ladies, Deirdre O’Sullivan in her final month as Ladies Captain decided to bow out in style and took the ladies nett with a score of 93 while Pat Conway had a 96 to take second nett with Valerie O’Leary following hubby Mick’s win by taking the ladies gross prize with 3. The presentation of prizes delivered by the Captains and overseen by the Competitions Secretary William Fitton saw a large turnout with some lovely goodies provided by the Ladies Committee for the sweet toothed including yours truly Next weekend sees the club travelling to Inniscarra for the first time since the Pandemic to take part in a mixed fourball, 2.30 for a 3pm start and the feedback is that everyone is looking forward to it. Normal Fourball on Saturday. Course open to Green Fees but will be closed on Saturday as Kilworth have it booked for their annual outing.
