Another great week for Lakewood with some mighty crowds playing in the fourballs. Wednesday saw the O’Leary’s back in the Winners enclosure for Nett and 2nd Nett with Mick partnering Ann O’Herlihy coming in with a great score of 8 under to nett at 35. It’s been a long time since Mick had a nett that low playing off 2 but with some great support from Ann came close to the course record with the Championship course in play. Val took second nett with her best bud Gentleman John, scoring 4 under to nett at 39.5 beating PJ and Josie Twomey on the back nine on handicap. PJ’s short miss on the 16 was the cost factor which goes to show that all putts should be treated with care. On the other hand John Dineen was motivated by Betty White to raise his game and they took the gross with 5 under. Saturday Morning saw a reasonable turnout for the Captains Juvenile Prize Competition which placed Jack O’Keeffe on the Winners podium with a score of 88 nett for 36 holes while Mark Burns took the gross. Oisin Desmond took second gross and Rory Fitzgerald won second Nett. The Competition was overseen by Darren O’Leary, Juvenile Officer, Pat Moore Captain and President John Curtin. Special thanks to Bart Millard who sponsored the Gross Prize.Saturday Afternoon saw John Dineen and Josie Twomey taking the nett with 38 nett while John Ahern and Eileen Murphy took the gross with 6 under beating Pat Moore and Darren O’Leary on the back nine. Eileen’s chip on the 9th from 14th feet was the shot of the daySunday Morning the rain was heavy on the grass and the humidity in the air made it heavy going for most but Frank Riordan found it easy and in partnership with Bart Millard brought in a score of 10 under to nett at 38. Rumor has it that Frank swapped his pants for his wet jeggings which had Mary Donovan chasing Jeepers around the course but Pat Conway was undeterred shooting four birdies Sunday evening a smaller crowd but there was some great scoring from JP Murphy and Billy Fitton who took the nett with a magnificent 54 points while Darren O’Leary and John Dineen pulled out all stops to take the gross with 46 points scoring 10 under. There were a number of 50 pointers and PJ had 51 points with Betty white which on another day would be a clear winner .The news of Martin Mylers passing brought a touch of sadness to the course on Saturday as Martin and his Wife Mary were great supporters to Lakewood Pitch and Putt Club over the years with Sponsorship towards the Club Open and also to the St Mary’s Annual Charitable Competition. Our Deepest Sympathies to Mary and the Myler family on their sad loss, Martin will be sadly missed by all who knew him.The Captains prize is commencing on Thursday with some hot favourites named to take the main prizes but it all depends on the day
