Saturday contrary to Met Eireann’s predictions was a beautiful day which saw a large turnout and again the numbers worked out to allow for a three ball scramble returning some really unbeatable scores. PJ Curtin hasn’t been in the winners enclosure for a while but this changed on Saturday as he was blessed to be part of the team that included Ann O’Herlihy and Josie Twomey and between them returned a score of 11 under and 29.3 nett while Eileen Murphy was in brilliant form landing the ball on 16 of the 18 greens and converting 12 to take the gross with JP Murphy and Margaret Bowen. Gentleman John had a marvelous game and his spectacular chip on the 11 puts him in the Senior Ranking. Betty White and Pat Moore were the winners of the hole in one for July thanks to Val O’Leary who made the draw.Sunday another great crowd which saw Rick and Valerie drawn together again and producing another first class performance taking the nett with 11 under and 37 nett while Bart Millard took first and second gross with PJ Curtin and Betty White respectively. Bart and PJ had 12 under while Bart and Betty had 7 under. Dermot Murphy and Mary Murphy took second nett 37 but were beaten by 1/2 a shot on the back nine for overall while Tim Linehan took 3rd nett with Paddy Dennehy with 38 nett.Sunday Evening Ann O’Herlihy and Birthday Girl Eileen Murphy took the nett with 11 up and John Dineen was the winner of the gross with Dermot Murphy with 6 under. Rumour has it that Dermot is planning some exotic treat for Eileen but is very tight lipped.Monday Morning one of the biggest crowds witnessed in years showed up for the 27 hole competition which brought out the competitive streak in Ann O’Herlihy who took the nett with Pat Moore with 8 under and 54 nett while Mick O’Leary and Pat O’Keeffe won the gross with a magnificent 13 under.Mary O’Donovan after a bad start motivated Bart Millard to up his performance and took second nett with 10 under and 59 nett while Rick O’Mahony and Frank Riordan took second gross with 10 under. Gentleman John nearly lost out as he delegated putting his name on the sheet and drew younger brother PJ who took a 5 on the 5th which cost them as they finished a shot behind Bart and Mary on 60. John Ahern was fine and vfresh after his long weekend in Kinsale and returned a good card with John Dineen but on this occasion it wasn’t good enough. Dan Shine and Pat Conway ran out of steam after 18 holes while JP and Billy Fitton in need of more exercise covered more of the course than what was needed. Our thoughts this week were with former President Dave Linehan who after giving his daughter Marie a scare has settled into the comfort and care of the Nurses in CUH.
Monday evening a reduced number which was put down to the strenuous morning which saw Frank Riordan demonstrate his ability to play in the senior section scoring 9 under and 54 points to take the nett with John Dineen while Mick O’Leary and Paddy Dennehy took the gross with 7 under and everyone else went home with some happy memories and a lot of what ifs.John Curtin worked up an appetite and was debating whether he would have a date with Chow Mein which put Pat Moore in the mood for a Full Irish for breakfast. Bunkers will be back in play next week to allow for practice for the Captains Prize on the 20th. Course open to Green Fees and Limited Membership is still available.
