The weekend got off to a good start, well for Gretchen and Alan it definitely did, as their partnership saw off Billy and Rick in the final of the Club Handicap Matchplay. Two down with three to go and Billy missing the putt on the 35 hole saw Gretchen and Alan victorious after two hard weeks battling through some tough opposition. Billy and Ricky gave away 2 shots over the 36 hole competition but it was enough for Alan and Gretchen to use to their advantage. Well done to all who took part. Saturday Mick O’Leary with great support and the high handicaps of Mary O’Donovan and Margaret Bowen sailed home to victory with a magnificent nett of 79 while Valerie O’Leary ably assisted by Ted Canty, back for a short period of time after his many travels and PJ Curtin who was preparing for lock-in due to the Cork City Marathon took the gross with 103. Great night in the bar on Saturday night with the huge turnout for the match and the Bar-B-Q. Sunday morning and Betty White was in great demand having been drawn for two fourballs at different parts of the course but settled for Valerie O’Leary and took second nett with a score of 43 losing out by half a shot to Mick O’Leary and John Ahern who took the nett while John Dineen and Paddy Dennehy were the gross winners with four under. Sunday evening saw Gentleman John fresh from celebrating a very important birthday with family on the Saturday Night in fine fickle, pitching , chipping and putting from all directions taking the nett with JP Murphy on 38.5 while younger sibling PJ who was able to breakthrough the barriers and make an appearance took the gross with Paddy Dennehy. Rumour has it that Gentleman John has set his sights on the Lakewood Scratch Cup in June. Monday morning Paddy was again in the winners enclosure with Shelia O’Leary taking second nett with 42.5 but Bart Millard and Frank Riordan shot eleven under to nett at 37 and won by a clear margin. Valerie O’Leary was also back for the gross with Mary O’Donovan with a score of four under beating Billy Fitton and Ted Canty on the back nine but it was enough for them to take second gross.
