The Club Fourballs will shortly be renamed to the Club Threeballs as the numbers attending deem it appropriate to play team events giving everyone an opportunity to take part. Wed the threeball consisted of the best two out of three scores while Saturday it was agreed that a three ball scramble would be the order of the day.
Wednesday saw Val O’Leary captaining a ladies team of Josie Twomey and Sheila O’Leary to take the nett with an impressive 84 while J P Murphy led the boy team of Noel McCarthy and Mick Lehane to take the gross with 10 under. Noel Macs new glasses seem to be working wonders combined with the laser treatment has upped his game to former senior status as he is featuring in the winners enclosure a lot of late. Val O’Leary was back in form on Saturday for the scramble taking the gross with Billy Fitton and Mick Lehane while Eileen Murphy encouraged P J Curtin and John Dineen to raise their game to win the nett from Noel Mac, John Ahern and Sheila O’Leary by 1/6 of a shot on the back nine. It was a very tight competition with only 1 shot between all the cards which boils down to missing a putt by a whisker at some hole. Catherine O’Keeffe and John Ahern were dishing out the chocolates beforehand but on closer inspection the best by date was well exceeded and as Frank said its as good as going on a diet.
Sunday morning the County Council duo of Pat Moore and Dan Shine combined well to take the nett with a great score of 36 nett while Mick O’Leary took the gross with Tim Linehan also County Council with 8 under, Catherine O’Keeffe was blessed with Betty White who had 6 birdies to take second nett leaving Frank Riordan and John Dineen with second gross beating the bould PJ and John Ahern on the back six.
Sunday Evening a nice group turned up in the misty rain to venture out and play the course which saw John Dineen and George Bolton take the nett with 39 while Betty White and Pat Moore went home with the gross.
Congratulations to Valerie Leahy, Lakewood who won the Ladies section of the Cork Handicap Matchplay, well done Valerie and best of luck in the Munster.
The Club outing is all set for Saturday with the Members travelling to Cunningar to test this championship course. There is a touch of Chuck Norris in Dave Linehan as he is back in Action and ready for allcomers. He said he has happy memories of Cunningar but also a bad one when he left the PJ Bell behind there one year due to over excitement. The trip to Lawlors for the grub and the sweet sherry afterwards and the presentation of prizes should put the finishing touches to an exciting day.
Normal fourball on Sunday. Course open to Green Fees with fees being the operative word, all welcome.
