Last week one could be forgiven for thinking that we had moved lock stock and barrel to Spain what with the sun and the large numbers playing on the scorched grass in Lakewood but the greens were nice and green almost like a wool carpet. This is all down to the grounds staff, John Ahern, Pat Twomey, John Curtin, Eugene, John Dineen with Frank at the helm and the occasional volunteer.
After a hectic week the winners were announced on Sunday night which saw a great win for the O’Leary Family making a clean sweep for the Captains Prize. Val taking the Ladies Captain Prize with a Magnificent 93 points while son Darren took the Gents Prize with 93 points also beating his father Mick on the last hole with a Birdie however Mick took the overall Gross with 12 under while Pat Conway took the Ladies with a Gross of 75
Pat Moore took 1st Nett with 90 points beating John Ahern on the back 18 who had to settle for 2nd Nett leaving the 1st Gross to Bart Millard and Rick O’ Mahony took 2nd Gross.
Gretchen Ahern took 1st Nett in the Ladies with 87 points while Betty White took 1st Gross
Eileen Murphy was the 2nd Nett winner and Mary Murphy took 2nd Gross.
Alan Foley was the best in the Visitors with 90 Points. A great weekend with over 150 cards played. Also the Captains Bar B Que on Saturday Night was a great success with the Chefs Pat Moore and Peter De Forbha cooking up a storm with the steaks and sausages complimenting the magnificent food provided by the Ladies Committee. Overall another successful Captains Weekend which was a measure of the popularity that Both Frank Riordan and Catherine O’Keeffe hold.
The O’Leary’s were also in the winners enclosure for the three ball scramble on Sunday Night which saw Val taking the nett with Mary Murphy and Paddy Dennehy while Mick won the gross with John Dineen and Margaret Bowen. Next Monday sees the finale of the Summer Leagues and its all to play for. Last week we travelled to the Ranges and had a great night, the course was in great condition, Tom Sheehan and his team have the greens in great shape and it was a pleasure to play on them and of course the goodies on the 19th were worth the visit alone.
