The Club travelled to Newmarket on saturday for the Annual Outing. The Newmarket course was very challenging and with the long distances, sand bunkers galore and tricky greens the scoring was on the low side. considering that the course is set at 8 under and having played it I can see why a par score for a first timer is very good. P J Curtin and Sheila O’Leary took the nett with a 47.5 while John Ahern and Pat Moore took the gross with 2 over. Frank Riordan and Pat O’Keeffe won second nett with 49. As the weather was iffy the singles competition was scrapped and it was agreed to have a three ball scramble instead resulting in Billy Fitton’s team of Dan Shine, Eileen Murphy and Alison Harvey taking the Nett with 8 under with a nett of 37.75 beating Pat Moore, Josie Twomey and Paddy Dennehy by a quarter of a shot while John Ahern, Pat Conway and Catherine O’Keeffe took 1st Gross from Betty White, Frank Riordan and Pat O’Keeffe. Despite the weather the Members had a great day. John Curtin decided to sand one of the greens and according to Frank he emptied the bunker on the pretense of getting his ball out, Tom in charge of the course was very helpful and the ladies in The Pantry provided a superb lunch which was badly needed to energise the body and tackle the hills on the course.. Magnificent course well worth a trip for a game, you definitely wont be disappointed.
The Group went back to the Castle Hotel in Macroom for some light beverages and a 4 course meal for soakage. A great night was had by all. Catherine O’Keeffe was also in the winners enclosure for her hole in one while hubby Pat had to settle for a Chocolate Kinder for his closest to the hole where a slight breeze would have made the difference.
Normal fourballs resumed on Sunday with PJ Curtin and Josie Twomey taking the Nett with 34.5 nett while Michael O’Leary and Mick Lehane took the gross with 10 under. John Ahern and Paddy Dennehy were there for second nett with an 8 under to nett 36. Mick O’Leary was back in form sunday evening with a magnificent 14 under with John Curtin netting at 31.5 and also taking the Gross with Eileen Murphy at 13 under par. Catherine O’Keeffe and Pddy Dennehy took 2nd Nett with 38.
The Curtin Boys were back together on Wed with 10 under to take the nett with35 shooting 9 under while P J and John dineen took the gross with 8 and Noel McCarthy won 2nd Nett with Mary O’Donovan/
