Results for the St Mary’s Competition

Another successful St Mary’s School Benefit Competition which saw the proceeds of the weekend presented to Mary Conroy by the Chairperson Frank Riordan at the presentation of prizes to the winners on Sunday night. The competition was very well supported both in terms of donations, prizes and cash and also the numbers that played in the fourball competitions which is testament to the Memory of Jim O’Shea who along with his wife Rene championed this event for the past 30+ years. A number of hole in one vouchers were presented to Pat Moore, Noel McCarthy, Sheila O’Leary and P J Curtin. Sheila also won the designated monthly hole in one competition on Sat when she pitched straight into the 4th from her tee shot.. Her playing partner John Dineen got so excited that he jumped straight up, punching the air in a Superman pose and very nearly took off over the weather shelter on the 4th Tee Box.
Paddy Dennehy’s upgraded equipment definitely did wonders for his game as he was a clear winner in the singles competition with an 80 nett which would be good enough to win an Open. Mick O’Leary took the gross from Pat Twomey who had to settle for 2nd gross while Noel McCarthy took 2nd Nett sending him back on his way to the Senior Ranks
Betty White was a very popular winner in the ladies section, having been so close on a number of occasions this year and each time was just pipped, with Val O’Leary taking the gross from Pat Conway while Gretchen Ahern won 2nd Nett.
There were a number of 4 balls over the week which saw Billy Fitton and Frank Riordan taking both 1st Nett on the back nine and also the 5th Nett. Billy was also very lucky with his draw with John Curtin taking the 4th Nett while Darragh O’Herlihy was blessed on Sunday Night to draw John and take 5th Gross with him.
Billy was the topic of conversation on Sunday Night when he modeled his new snakeskin golf shoes and strutted his moves on the pathway, unfortunately it didn’t improve his game on the night but he is a willing pupil and is learning fast. There was a shortage of ladies in the winners enclosure but Sheila O’Leary and Mary O’Donovan made the effort and Sheila took 4th Gross with John Dineen while Mary took 3rd Nett with P J Curtin who also won the 2nd gross with Pat Moore. They were beaten for the 1st Gross on the back nine by Bart Millard who partnered Pat Moore on Sunday morning. Pat O’Keeffe was also a dual winner taking 2nd Nett with Dan Shine and 3rd Gross with Noel McCarthy and went home to Catherine a very happy camper.
The Members are all set to travel to Newmarket on Saturday for the annual club outing and back to the Castle Hotel in Macroom for a meal and a glass or two of some black lemonade.
Normal four-balls continue for the next few weeks and as always new Members are most welcome. Applications for 2018 are invited from the start of October which will also see the start of the Christmas competitions.
Well done to all involved in the St Mary’s Competition, players, supporters, prize donaters, winners, course maintenance crew and in particular the green-keeper John who has the greens in mint condition.
